Without the whole picture you can only get scraps of clues, how you piece them together makes the difference. What one person iterprets as pure gold another sees as useless because of their own filters and frames of reference. I think there are lots of great strategies that have been provided in previous threads but I think even knowing just some of the details does not guarantee success. For example people can even say "affiliate offer **** has made me a fortune". They really have made a fortune out of it, they have told us not only the niche but the actual *product*.

What they dont tell you is that, say, the loophole they exploited has been closed, or exactly how they managed to get traffic to the offer, or maybe perhaps how they found keywords that got a great conversion rate while the competition made zero sales, etc.. If I was to follow their lead I wouldnt make any money, just because I can find an offer that should work in the way someone describes and even if I manage to drive traffic to my link does not mean that people will buy in the hordes making me more money than I spend on promoting it.

I have been talking to a great guy who made his money "email marketing", all the people he helped are now his comepetition and he got into the game the same way. I currently make .. well .. *lose* money but I can understand people not wanting to share. He is quite philosophical about it, probably because he knows he will always be one step ahead.
I suspect that the dismal statistics are that over 99% of the people who tried to fund a "worthwhile" project with affiliate ads failed. The majority of people who tried affiliate ads in a get rich quick scheme failed as well.
A large number of the most successful affiliates are doing rather nasty things like installing parasites on machines, email spam or search engine spam.
For example there are affiliates with massive databases of products (often the databases are horrifically inaccurate). They then create millions of garbage web pages that search engines might mistake as meaningful.
Many successful affiliates do misleading things like join a datafeed with the FIPS database to create montrous misleading web sites to catch people who do searches on a town name and a product.
To affiliates the term "content" means key word rich steams of words. There are now affiliates that just grab meaningless streams of words and make misleading pages with ads.

There are other clever tricks. For example, if store X doesn't offer coupons, you can make a "COUPON COUPON, GET YOUR COUPON PAGE AT STORE X COUPON STORE X COUPON, COUPON" Page. It does not matter that you don't have a coupon. The keyword combo is all that matters.
A person looking for a bargaing just might end up on your page. If you load the merchant site in a 1x1 frame to set the affiliate tag. Bada bam bad-bing. You get the commission and are off to don your white leisure suit in the local lounge.

My guess is that for every dollar made by a site trying to do something worthwhile, $3 are made by affiliates pulling stunts with misleading datafeeds, misleading text, parasite program or other practice.
A company that produces specialized widgets for a narrow industry may have high production costs but lower advertising costs (everyone knows to get special machine-tooled widgets from WidgetWorld.

A company that has a high margin on services may spend more for advertising to get its name out there, because the name recognition may be the only product-differentiator.
A sensible advertising budget depends on:
Your sector
Fixed costs per sale
Average costs per sale
Margin per sale
ROI for each additional dollar spent
For example, if I currently spend 0.5% of revenues on sales, and I double that expenditure to 1%, I would want to see at least a doubling in dollars returned as sales.
Sometimes, there's a critical mass you need to invest in advertising before it does any measurable good. Money spent below the breakthrough threshold might be spent but have no ROI, but then when I raise advertising over the threshold, things start happening on their own.

Yes, I'm doing a lot of handwaving, but I'm not sure that there's a concrete percentage that can be defined as a golden rule for every business in every situation.
The best general principal is to pay attention to your cashflow and invest that money where you believe it has the best ability to grow your company's strengths. Feed the projects and events that are successful or have the potential for great success, and starve projects that are malingering or offer little chance of success.
Subscriptions
Personally I don't like obvious subscriptions too much. Always leaves a bad taste with the audience asking "what's gonna be next they'll charge me?".
Instead I would build themed interest areas for free newsletters and promise great detail about the topics covered. Of course you would have to deliver on the promise but as you do you can enrich the content very nicely with affiliated content and services (bring it into strong context of your theme) and other related sales (your own products and services, bundling or new promotions).
I'd do them with Autoresponders that you could even chain up so there would potentially be a never ending stream of messages (not more than 2 a month) as long as they stay subscribed. But content and relavancy are key here.
Nice about this: take top paragraphs and re-use for more pages, teasing for the newsletter details, getting more subscriptions in. Use the same teaser paragraphs for your forums with similar topics to feature on top and again tease for subscriptions to the newsletters.
An additional approach to build valuable subscription based service would be to ask a little fee for news delivery on the above mentioned themes and topics. Lookout for someone who provides these reports and such (like industry coverage) and ask for syndication, re-syndication, database utilization and commission on directly sold reports off their web site.
The workload could be minimized using autoresponders and databases wherever possible but if you want to do it right and cover interesting areas you would need one FTE to bring it all to live and maintain, add-up, update, entertain + grow partner network etc.
Basically you don't collect for an obvious subscription but do it in the second and third row of using the newsletters for free, people love free stuff, especialy if it's content-rich and relevant, supportive to their field of interest.
Affiliates
Once you know what drives CTR you can branch out and find great potential affiliates, that you can limit to top performers (ask them to re-use some of their content, I haven't met any partner yet who would refuse if you can show dedication and wave with serious traffic). You will need to limit anayway when you don't go with a network.

Once you found a great partner to work with do your keyword research and buy a new domain where you build a niche for them, re-use their content, enrich with what you can offer and ask your users to participate (thus grow the site and add value).
Syndicate
Having many users interested in content-heavy areas you could consider to syndicate content to their company sites as well.
You would have to build a content stream yourself first though: this is how Epinions started out, they just built a web site structure and it was filled by willing users to be paid and motivated by the writers competition and voting psychology. Epinions just watched and the site grew. After growing you could offer this very content for a fee.

Quality classifieds (you need good offline support not to be considerd another weak me-too) and to build their own store, selling stuff from your site, if done right and simple, this is where the money is, especially when combining the two.

The Page Rank Calulation is a calulation orignally designed to find and rank the popularity of node in a database. (I may have got details wrong) This has been admitted by google. The calulation is based on the idea that you ever time you link to another webpage you are effectivly voting for it, and this will raise the webpage value of important i.e. Page rank. Every webpage would start off with say a value of 1, now it can vote worth 85% of it's value meaning to start with it's vote is worth 0.85 now this value will be devided between the pages it links to, so if it has two outbound links it will assign both of them 0.425 so the pages it links two have a value of 1.425 (this may vary, in practice) , now this calulation has to be repeated multiple time because otherwise page rank would never travel past one page. So Every time you link out of your site you will be passing a fraction of your pagerank to the other person site that otherwise you have passed internally and as this equation increments multiple times you will lose more and more.
You may not have noticed the loss for a number of reason, firstly you are proable slowely increasing your IBL which will offset this effect and ever time all of the other wedsite you are lnking with are fluctuating in pagerank so it would be very hard to tell.
This is a fairly sound principle and can be proven by the way people manage to bunch up page rank into the optimised pages. It is also the basie behind the Page Rank Calulator. So you can see it in action here:
Why would people link to relevant website, for a few reason. Peoples motivation are not always to gain more page rank, some website want to provide valuable content some sell links, some are unaware of the loss of page rank, lot of website don't rely on search engine for traffic, some have more Page rank than they need for the uncompetitive search term they get traffic from. Another good reason is because google has tons more variables which it works into the ranking equation and one of them may well be element of pages that you link to, page rank is only part of the equation and most people goal is for traffic and not pagerank.

5% is pretty low. The point is that you want to get your affiliates really excited and working their tails off to present your wares to their audience - what would you expect to pay a sales person? I'm signed up for a bunch of programs and the low commission ones get a text link or button off to the side of the page - or frankly nothing at all. The one with a 30% commission gets top billing. I mention the sponsor all the time, incorporate it into my email messages, and generally push it whenever I can.
So, you need to find that magic number where you can really set your affiliates on fire. And if you've got a product that you can offer additional products down the road, a large commission up front is a great way to acquire new customers - who you can make money off of for years.

Finally, you need to pick an attractive affiliate % from off the top because all your best potential affiliate partners are going to find out about it fairly soon, and then either sign up or write you off as being too low to consider. It'll be hard to win them back again down the road.

Both are mail and from the civil liberties point of view identical.
---
Possibly true, but it's that very argument that has prevented any advancement in spam control. If there's to be a solution, people really need to think outside the mail box.
As for a postal fee....
Email users will not tolerate a postage rate on email....no matter how minimal. If we have to start paying for every joke we send to our best friend, we will soon be seeking out the Kazaa of email.

What so many people seem to miss is that UCE isn't actually a "problem". It is merely a side effect of a much larger problem. The Internet.
If you step back and look at the big picture, you can see that it's not restricting business practices that needs to be addressed. It's the sheer existance of these businesses themselves.
Anybody with a computer and an internet connection can start a business, most with good intentions. However it's the handful of flyby night, snake-oil salesmen that are sending out the UCE.
Until some brilliant minds can find a way to sort the good from the crooked, fairly, anything done about UCE is simply treating the symptom, not the cause.
I still believe that all the problems combined will one day lead to every user having to hold a certified, verified ID number.

There are people that control incredible amounts of traffic and they can direct it to where they want. I remember when utrade.com (no longer online) was offering a certain amount of $$ per new registration. There was a webmaster that created a lot of auction domains and created a zero frameset page directed right to the sign-up page for utrade.
The surfer was given a choice, sign up and make me money or get the hell out of here. The ratio was something like 1:6 that registered. Multiply by a few thousand people/day and do the math.
He was the top affiliate with crazy amounts of money being made. I would not be surprised if he is making money with the e-bay program.
I kind of know how he got a lot of his traffic. He had a program that would pay webmasters $.03/search directed to some type of Yahoo knock-off. He would then filter it based on keyword and basically arbitrage it off to affiliate links.

>Before you start trying to negotiate, be sure you are really doing some good numbers.
That is #1 - show them the money. If you aren't sending super affiliate traffic/conversions, don't ask for super affiliate deals.
Building that relationship can help, and you do get good inside info out of it sometimes. However, I usually don't have time to cultivate this - I have too much other, more pressing stuff to do.
When I feel like I should be making more because of top traffic, top conversions, or I just get that feeling - I fire off an email and ask what can we do to improve the relationship. Try not to come off as, "hey, I need more $$$!" Work it, baby.
Also, when you have another merchant that offers you a better deal, tell the program you use before you leave them - they sometimes come back with a better deal than the new merchant. You can play them against each other just as you can in the bricks world when you get a better job offer.
Super affiliates are hard to come by, the smarter companies will realize they need to do whatever they can to retain them.
>I emailed them saying "hello ... I am here.....can you help me".
Affiliate managers don't usually have a lot to offer a super affiliate. If they knew enough to be able to help us, they probably wouldn't need us. What they often do have to offer, is inside industry info, and a good view of some real world data. They don't always know the value in this, or that it could help you, so you have to ask specific questions.

Most important part of being an affiliate is being creative...and flexible. You need to be DIFFERENTIATED! If you aren't different, well, YOU LOSE. Once you are big enough in that small niche category it's very hard to take you out of it. Free traffic and repeat customers start to pour in. Then you also need to think of different ways to advertise:
banners (some companies offer $2 cpm, that's $2 CPM!)
newsletters (even buy opt-ins cheaply)
link trading
PPC's (huge, use as many as possible that can fit your ROI)
search engines
word of mouth
Scumware sucks for everyone so never use it, you are low and pathetic if you use scumware methods.
I repeat though, find a market that isn't well developed. Make your self different or get off the net. This is going to be very very hard, but can be ($10,000/month) profitable.
